Kitchen Renovations

The kitchen will undergo extensive renovations to enlarge the room, modernize the equipment, bring it up to current health code, and make better use of the space.

Current plans are to increase the size of the room by incorporating the pantry space that currently holds the dishes and personal refrigerator, the small closet at the top of pit stairs, and the area that is now Cook's porch into the kitchen. Incorporating Cook's porch into the kitchen will require approval by the Brookline Preservation Commission. The architects are currently discussing this change with the Commission. To make this approval easier, the plans include two large windows in the corner that is now the porch to give that area the open look that it now has from the outside.

Renovations, in addition to increasing the size described above, will include:

  • Remove the wall that currently divides the kitchen in half.
  • All new equipment, including stove, refrigerators, freezer, and vegetable steamer. (The sanitizer was replaced this summer when the old one broke.)
  • A large island in the center of the room for preparing food.
  • Countertops all along the east and north walls with five sinks required by health code. A countertop will also be added to the left side of the stove for convenience.
  • Space will be made to move the extra freezer up from Pit Proper so all cold storage will be in the kitchen.
  • Lots of wall cabinet space will be added. (Additional cabinet space will also be built in the dining room.)
  • Floors will be redone with either vinyl or epoxy.
  • A drain will be added to the floor, so water spills will not leak into the Pit.
  • Walls will be tiled with personalized tiles decorated by alumni who have donated at the 259 Society level (or higher).
